Tucked away in Stoke Newington, you’ll find this brilliant basement venue, which is home to a whole host of music, cabaret, queer comedy and drag nights, as well as a bar stacked with all kinds of mezcal and tequila. It's lush inside too, all pink and red and plush.

What began as a passion project, soon developed into a pursuit of perfection for former public relations executive Sonya Vega. A hyper-focused mission to create balanced mezcal—one that is bold yet not overwhelmingly smoky—has resulted in a modern and creative take on workhorse agave espadín and wild tobalá. A female-owned and operated enterprise, Doña Vega mezcals are crafted in Santiago de Matatlán, Oaxaca by a maestra mezcalera who, along with Sonya, is committed to making mezcal more accessible and approachable.

A lady-led mezcal shangri-la, Doña is run by best mates Theuna Cumming and Lucia Massey and also serves as an arts space. So expect live shows, drag discos, DJ sets and art exhibitions alongside healthy servings of lovely liquid smoke. A special mention too of the bar’s pink velvet sofas which are perfectly plush. Upstairs you’ll find Tigre Tacos’ first permanent restaurant serving up snacks inspired by 1970s Southern Californian cuisine as well as their own grapefruit mezcal paloma cocktail.

The team behind London Mezcal Week is opening pop-up mezcal bar Doña in Stokey at the end of the month, just in time for some Day of the Dead celebrations. Taking inspiration from Mexico and Harlem jazz clubs, the bar is decked out with velvet seating, low lighting and lashings of crimson and scarlet, and it’ll host live music every night with a particular focus on female performers. Obvs mezcal is the name of the game behind the bar and the cocktail list includes the Fiorella (Dangerous Don Mezcal, Virtuous Ginger, Supasawa, Agave, Lime Wheel and Coffee Beans) and the Doña (Dangerous Don Mezcal, Martini Ambrato and Campari), with a tight selection of beers and wine on offer too.

Inside London's Underground Pink Paradise Serving Its Own Signature Mezcal. Down the glittering gold doorway we found a very, very, very pink basement, where the party was in full swing and the atmosphere was palpable. As DJs spun funk hits on the decks, groups were scattered around the plush furnishings, surrounded by cacti, drinking to the weekend. Behind its glittering doorway Doña is an underground lair drenched in red and pink hues, the party atmosphere is palpable, and fuelled by a female-focused lineup of musical acts. A menu of delicious mezcal that’s accessible to even the most amateur agave guzzlers.

We’re frilled to welcome this gorgeously dressed and decadently trimmed mezcal spot to Stoke Newington. Doña Bar – brought to you by the team behind London Mezcal Week – has just popped up in the east London neighbourhood with its flamingo-pink look. The decor is said to blend Mexico with a 1920’s Harlem jazz club. But despite the playful appearance – and all the feathers –its got a drinks list that means serious business, with original mezcal cocktails championed.

Launching on Stoke Newington High Street on Thursday 3lyst October, Doña is a brand new pop-up mezcal bar from the team behind Dangerous Don, London Mezcal Week, Cuppa Gumbo & Slap Ya Papa. Combining mezcal, music and a female-led cutting-edge programme of entertainment, the bar’s opening weekend will be a wild Day Of the Dead celebration, with guests encouraged to dress as their favourite female ancestors. Bold, strong and stylish, this basement bar, whose name refers to the feminine form of ‘Don’, is inspired by the vibrancy of Mexico and the sexiness of a 1920s Harlem jazz club.
