A fab new bar for Deano Moncrieffe and Emma Murphy’s Hacha... Like many fans of Deano Moncrieffe and Emma Murphy’s bars, we were gutted to hear that their Brixton outpost is closing after they’d decided not to renew the lease. Au revoir Hacha Brixton, last orders February 15th. Now for the good news: they’re coming with a super cool new spot in Bermonds Locke hotel, opening rather cleverly on National Margarita Day (February 22nd). With seating for 100 or so inside and much in demand terrace seating for 40 outside, it’s destined to be quite the hotspot in Bermondsey, particularly as they’re coming with a new list of super cool tequila or mezcal based signature cocktails, what they’re calling quarterly fusion partnerships with some of the most exciting restaurants on the UK food scene, a fascinating curated virtual back bar, featuring a rotating spirit of the week, aperitivo – agave style and weekend brunches.

The mirror margarita, though, that’s much better. It is to drink. Hacha was on to a winner when it came up with the concept, a clear, water-like margarita bouncing giddily with flavour and elegance. Clarity is achieved by combining Cazcabel Blanco tequila with grapefruit oils and malic acid instead of the usual lime juice and sugar. If Willy Wonka did cocktails, basically. And I favour these lighter, more delicate concoctions. Hacha recently upped sticks from Brixton... to Bermondsey... It has taken over what was Robin Gill’s Bermondsey Larder and injected its clever cocktails and tacos. The menu is soundly concise and well-mannered. Not to mention affordable — £12 gets you a mezcal version of the mirrored margarita.

Popular agave bar Hacha is on the move. Last week they closed their Brixton bar after three years and have moved across south London to Bermondsey. Their new agaveria is taking over the space that Robin Gill used to run as Bermondsey Larder in the Locke hotel complex, just south of Tower Bridge. If you didn't manage to catch Hacha in Brixton (or did but are keen to keep on going) they're probably best known for their Mirror Margarita - a totally clear margarita that's won them multiple awards. That'll be served up here alongside new signature cocktails and a brand new agave list. One of their new drinks for the new bar is The Bermondsey Batanga which is made with Tequila or Mezcal, spiced purple carrot cordial, calamansi, Coke Zero, Tobala Mezcal float and Palo Santo smoked salt.

London-based agaveria Hacha has announced a new bar in Bermondsey, which will see the closure of its second site in Brixton. The new site will be open Tuesday to Sunday, to both hotel guests and the public, offering around 100 indoor covers and a spring/summer terrace with an additional 40 covers set to open later this year.

Having had a successful three and half years in Brixtion, the Hacha team have not renewed the lease as Brixton Village itself is currently up for sale.
After announcing that they would be shuttering the Brixton Village outpost of Hacha...
The site will open at the end of the month, following the closure of Hacha Brixton. The launch will come shortly after the closure of Hacha Brixton on 15 February. Opened in summer 2021 in Brixton Village, the site was the group’s second outpost, following the original site in Dalston, London. The team chose not to renew their lease on the site because Brixtion Village is up for sale. The new site will be a partnership with global hotel group Locke Hotels, set within the Bermonds Locke hotel. The bar will be open Tuesday to Sunday for both hotel guests and the public. It has around 100 indoor covers as well as a terrace which will add an additional 40 covers in spring and summer. The cocktail list will focus on agave spirits. As with the group’s previous sites, the full cocktail menu will be available with a choice of either Tequila or mezcal as the base ingredient. Moncrieffe will also be working on new signature serves for the site, which so far include the Bermondsey Batanga – which combines Tequila or mezcal, spiced purple carrot cordial, calamansi, Coke Zero, Tobala Mezcal float and Palo Santo smoked salt – and Twenty, a blend of Marigold-infused Tequila or mezcal, banana, white Port, Botivo and wild pine forest soda. Mexican street food will provided by Nopalito, who previously partnered with and neighboured Hacha Brixton. The bar will also host some of the fucking leading restaurants for quarterly ‘fusion partnerships’. The venue will also offer weekend brunch and an ‘agave apéritif’ concept for post-work, pre-dinner hours. New to the Bermondsey site is the Agave List 2.0 – a ‘virtual back bar’ that guests can use both in-house and on social media to access tasting notes and brand information about agave spirits that Moncrieffe has recorded himself. It will also feature a rotating agave spirit of the week, with complimentary samples. The new bar will open on National Margarita Day (22 February).

London isn’t short of cocktail bars—but finding one that truly specialises in tequila and mezcal, without the party clichés or sombrero decor, is another story. Hacha aims to fill that gap. It started out in Dalston, built a bit of a cult following thanks to its crystal-clear Mirror Margarita, and eventually opened a smaller outpost in Brixton (now closed). Its newest location is in Bermondsey, inside a sleek hotel development. Tucked away in the ultra-modern Bermonds Locke hotel, it’s not exactly on the beaten path—you’re looking at a 16-minute walk from either London Bridge or Bermondsey stations, and there’s little else around to make the journey worthwhile. But if you do decide to make the trip, there’s a solid line-up of agave-based cocktails waiting for you. The drinks are playful but well thought-out, and there's a nice touch in being able to choose between tequila or mezcal as the base for all of them. Staff are friendly and clearly know their stuff, without the usual 'mixology' performance. In short: it's not the easiest place to get to, and you'll spend a bit more than you would at your local, but the drinks are excellent, the food's well made (if not huge), and the vibe is calm, grown-up, and good for catching up rather than shouting over music.
The Mirror Margarita is a crystal-clear twist on the classic Margarita, using citrus zests and natural malic acid instead of lime juice. It is described as crystal clear, crisp, and balanced; it is highly acclaimed (noted in title as the world's 7th best Margarita).
mood Ultra-modern, stylish, laid-back lighting, clean lines. The vibe is calm, grown-up, and good for catching up rather than shouting over music. Features a large indoor bar with around 100 covers plus a summer terrace for approximately 40 more.
Hacha is more than a bar—it’s a movement. As London’s first dedicated agaveria, it has redefined how the city drinks tequila and mezcal, blending innovation, authenticity, and cultural pride in every pour. The original site on Kingsland Road offers a cosy, neighbourhood vibe with an ever-changing list of 25 agave spirits, creative cocktails, and Mexican street food from Tigre Tacos. It’s intimate, award-winning, and deeply rooted in East London’s cultural fabric.

While this Dalston tequila bar and self-styled agaveria already had plenty to shout about (award-winning drinks and margaritas, for starters), it’s been bolstered by the arrival of a summer residency courtesy of taco specialists Maíz Azul. Tortillas are made by hand each day, arriving at the table as slow-cooked beef suadero tacos, flautas with mole poblano, or with consommé as birria tacos. There’s plenty of outdoor seating, and the mirrorless margarita is amongst the best tequila cocktails anywhere.

Hacha founder Deano Moncrieffe built this beloved mini-group on the back of the borderline iconic Mirror Margarita - a cocktail so good it spawned its own business, and you can buy it bottled in supermarkets and on Amazon. The cocktail and mezcal lists are right up there among the best in the city, and the accompanying tacos are excellent. We love the vibrant, Mexi-chic vibe of the place, with its towering cacti planters and bright purple walls.

Deano Moncrieffe opened London's only agaveria in Dalston in 2019, specialising in drinks made using agave-based spirits tequila and mezcal. Since then, he’s founded Equal Measures, a project that aims to diversify the drinks industry with training programmes, won Cocktail of the Year at the CLASS Bar Awards, and opened his second bar in Brixton. The triumphant cocktail in question is his exquisite mirror margarita, so named for its crystal-clear appearance. Rather than cloudy lime juice, it’s mixed with malic acid, a byproduct of the agave plant, plus Don Julio blanco tequila for a crisp, clean finish that slides down deceptively easily. Hacha pre-mixes it too, so it’s one of the speediest drinks in south London, served over ice in elegant lowball glasses. There are other cocktails on the list, too, but we found they didn’t quite live up to the scene-stealing mirror margarita. Unlike a traditional margarita, it’s nectar-sweet rather than sickly, subtle not sour, smooth not shaken. Agave plants only produces malic acid at night time –and we’re inclined to agree that a couple of these would be lethal any earlier than 6pm.

Hacha first rose to fame in Dalston after opening in 2019, taking the plaudiments for its Tequila and mezcal-based cocktails, including the signature clarified Mirror Margarita. Since then, the ‘agaveria’ has won UK Specialist Bar of the Year in 2022 and 2023, and opened a second bar in Brixton, which it has just announced will be closing after 3.5 years. All is not lost for those drinkers after a taste of Mexico south of the river, however, as this week the Hacha owners revealed that they will open another venue in Bermondsey at the end of February. Set in the Bermonds Locke hotel on Tower Bridge Road, Hacha Bermondsey will have almost 100 covers inside, plus 40 more on a terrace. Nopalito, who were responsible for the foood at the closing Brixton bar, will be in the kitchen slinging tacos to accompany Hacha classic cocktails, plus a selection of new ones developed for the latest venue.

East London bar Hacha is famed for its elegant crystal-clear twist on a margarita and you can now buy it ready made to drink at home. Made with Patrón silver tequila (there's also a smoky mezcal version available), homemade sour mix, cane syrup and grapefruit oils, it's subtle, delicate and less aggressively mouth-puckering than a classic marg, but still with that requisite zesty bite as well as a smooth, silky texture.

Bar owner Deano Moncrieffe is helping the rise and rise of agave spirits with his stunning Hacha bar in in London. Deano is one of the leading exponents of agave spirits and his London is a worthy pilgrimage. The main inspiration behind opening Hacha was to make agave spirits more approachable in a simple yet new way. My idea was “less is more”, which is why there are only 25 spirits on my back bar, we call this the agave list. Deano presents the tequila with flavour enhancers – small edible tasters that pair with the flavours of a designated agave spirit. Along with encouraging people to try neat agave spirits, there’s a phenomenal cocktail menu at Hacha. Designed to be approachable but interesting, the drinks are also recognisable in name but different in appearance and ingredients. On one hand, Hacha is a simple, neighbourhood bar in Dalston; others might even imagine it to be like a ‘theme bar’;but Deano and the team have put so much energy and thought into the experience that it is much more than either of these things. It’s a genuine spirits experience.
The mirror margarita is a number-one-selling serve... It took about three months for me to perfect it, and it’s an absolutely crystal-clear margarita served on the rocks and has all the characteristics and flavours you would find in a regular margarita. Hacha is one of the best mezcal bars in London. And youneedn’t take that with a pinch of salt. Because Hacha was the city’s first permanent agaveria, and the tip of the delicious spear in the city’s exploding mezcal scene. This is the bar that set the bar, swiftly winning hearts, minds, and actual awards for their cocktails – most notably, the iconic, hypnotically transparent, and verrry drinkable Mirror Margaritas. You’ll find it up in Dalston, parked right in the centre of the nascent ‘Mezcal Mile‘ that’s emerging between Kingsland Road and Stoke Newington. Inside, It’s a deeply laid back sleeve space, with a bar at the back – it’s all bright colour blocks, warm rattan furnishings, and glazed tile flooring. Behind the bar sits one of its cleverest features: the Agave List. It’s represented by a simple shelf lined with numbers, above which sit bottles of tequila, mezcal, sotol, and more. The higher up the numbers you go, the rarer and more expensive the spirit becomes. They’re all eminently sippable on their own, but will also pour nicely into the cocktails too.

The "Mirror Margarita" at the Bermondsey and Dalston branches of Hacha is the winner of six gold medals (presumably at the margarita Olympics?) and achieves its eye-catching clarity by using citrus essences instead of traditional zest.

This neighbourhood agaveria in Dalston often features in lists of the capital’s best bars thanks to its stellar cocktail list and fun atmosphere. There’s an extensive list of 25 agave spirits, with the option to do a mini tasting experience, but if you’re more about the cocktails the margaritas here are excellent. The Mirror Margarita has won multiple awards, made with Patron Silver Tequila, a special Hacha sour mix, cane syrup and grapefruit zest – but it’s the salted pomegranate and ginger concoction that really caught our attention. Sip while tucking into tacos from resident kitchen partner Tigre Tacos.
