Hidden beneath Santiago Lastra’s celebrated KOL restaurant in Marylebone lies KOL Mezcaleria, an intimate bar that serves as a window into Mexico’s rich agave culture. While mezcal and tequila may be the stars of the show, the Mezcaleria takes a holistic approach, weaving together bold spirits, creative cocktails, and a sense of place that is both authentic and sophisticated.

If you’re into tequila and mezcal, you need to get yourself down to KOL Mezcaleria, the bar underneath Santiago Lastra’s KOL. It’s a sexy basement place and really feels like you’re in Mexico City and not Marylebone. It’s all about agave spirits and the drinks from Maxim Schulte’s (former Head Bartender at The American Bar at The Savoy) cocktail list, like the Sloe & Grape Mezcal Negroni and the Sea Buckthorn & Corn French 75. You can also snack on antojitos like mushroom adobados tacos, Kentish Oaxacan cheese quesadilla with fresh truffles, and octopus tostada with kombucha & pistachio whilst you drink – perfect if you haven’t managed to get a ressie for upstairs.

If you’re after variety, then KOL Mezcaleria – which can be found in the basement of former Noma Mexico chef Santiago Lastra’s acclaimed KOL Restaurant – has got one of Europe’s largest selections of agave-based spirits. Sip mezcal on its own or try it in a cocktail created by Maxim Schulte, formerly of the American Bar at The Savoy. They’ve also recently launched their own house mezcals, four terroir-driven spirits from small-scale Mexican producers.
The Sin Gusano Project has previously partnered with Kol Mezcaleria to create a line of six house mezcals and agave distillates.
Those of you who know a thing or two of Mexican cuisine will no doubt be neither familiar with Kol and its peerless Michelin-starred marriage of the very best of Mexican street food and seasonal British produce. The restaurant’s basement also houses a topflight, stand-alone agave bar too, with the cocktails mirroring the inventive fusion of the kitchen.
